My General Thoughts on Haiti

Mon Jan 25, 2010, 1:10 PM
The earthquake that struck Haiti was, obviously, devastating; but are we putting too much on our shoulders? I believe one of the teachers at my school put it best when he offered his advice to Haitians: "Move." Haiti has always been a desolate, broken country, and the poorest country in the Western HEMISPHERE. And while I know this entire idea will put me on the bottom of the political chain, we must realize, it isn't our fault. No one meant for that earthquake to hit, but the fact is, we knew it would. Maybe that puts the guilt on us, that we knew and did nothing about it. But how can we do a preemptive security boost when an extreme weather disaster could happen anywhere, at any time? Why would we build stronger houses in Haiti, when all along we could need fortified walls in New Orleans? Or tsunami forces in Florida?

We should collect aid for Haiti, we shouldn't collect aid for Haiti. Our divine plan is to rebuild Haiti, make it into a mini tropical America with paid employment and no death rate and a surplus of medicine and video games and sanitizer. Good plan. Because clearly, American Politicians did a smashing job with Iraq, rural Africa and India.

No one should have to live in poverty, but it isn't our responsibility that they are. Certain places in the world just cannot sustain tens of thousands or millions of lives, and families. In reality, a predator builds up until its prey dies down, in which case the predator dies down, in which case the prey builds up. It's a cycle. But for some ridiculous reason, we humans hold ourselves above that rule and keep the weak alive right up next to the strong, and never die down, we just consume more and more until our environment can't sustain anything. So, we make artificial food and environments.

Back to Haiti. My point is, donate if it helps you sleep at night. I know I did. My family donated money, I donated money, and I'm making a painting to donate to a Haitian Fund silent auction. But it won't help, really, we will never be able to "re"build Haiti, because Haiti doesn't want to be rebuilt.
